Grants and Scholarships

The changes in our country’s financial markets have also affected our UMW grants; as the principle of each of our scholarship funds has decreased we have found that it will not be possible to give some of our grants and scholarships this year. We will award our Virginia Originals Scholarships and our Grants for Ethnic Minority Women. The Virginia Originals Scholarships are awarded to any women who have never attended a conference UMW event. This scholarship will cover one-half of the cost of registration, room and board not including travel to one of these events: Spiritual Life Retreat, School of Christian Mission Weekend (or dollar equivalent for the week), Young Women’s Retreat, and UMW Conference Annual Meeting. The Ethnic Minority Women Grants will cover registration, room and board to one of these events, Spiritual Life Retreat, School of Christian Mission Weekend (dollar equivalent for the week), Young Women’s Retreat, and UMW Conference Annual Meeting. Applications for both of these scholarships can be obtained from your District President.

The things, good Lord, that we pray for. Give us the grace to labor for.

 Amen

SMR Price Increase Maintains Margin for Mission

Beginning Jan 1, 2007, the price of the basic SMR pin increased from $35 to $40 and the price of the sapphire SMR pin from $50 to $60. Prices of other pins - pearl, $100; emerald, $200; ruby, $500; diamond, $1000, and double diamond, $2000 - will remain the same. The cost to acquire the metal for the pins has increased.

 Special Mission Recognitions are given to honor individuals’ work for and commitment to mission. They are given to members of UMW and beyond to others in churches and society. They recognize the important roles individuals play in mission in their local and global communities. Special Mission Recognitions can be given by groups, like UMW units, or by individuals:

    ♥    acknowledge a church member who has served as a missionary;

    ♥    honor a UMW member for her service to the organization;

    ♥    show appreciation to a young woman who is a tutor in the church’s after-school program;

    ♥    thank the director of the local food pantry for her or his work in the community;

    ♥    recognize a pastor who shows dedication to mission.
